Every year we write about the circus coming to town. In fact, we’ve written about an elephant trainer, who was a third-generation caregiver.
Last year, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey announced they would no longer be using elephants in its shows by 2018.
Now it looks like by May, the pachyderms will be retired. The City of Austin banned the use of bullhooks on the elephants last year.
Ringling Bros. usually comes to the Erwin Center every August. One has not been officially scheduled as of yet, but the circus will be in Houston at the end of July.
For now, if you want to see elephants in a circus, the Shrine Circus is in town this weekend at Cedar Park Center.
“Ben Hur Shrine Circus.” 7:30 p.m. Friday-Jan. 18, 11 a.m. Saturday-Jan. 18, 3 p.m. Saturday-Jan. 18. $9-$35. Cedar Park Center, 2100 Avenue of the Stars. cedarparkcenter.com.
